The Workers Advance Committee (WAC) initiated our Spanish-language computer classes. The WAC is a group of students and area workers committed to becoming leaders in JARC and the community in order to improve the economic stability of low-income workers. The WAC initiated a computer technology project to provide free computer access and training to the community.
The Workers Advance Committee also works closely with JARC’s Technology Promoters program. The goal of Technology Promoters is to develop educational leaders within the Latino community through a combination of leadership training and computer coursework. Promoters are recruited and self-selected from JARC’s Spanish computer classes. They acquire computer expertise and leadership skills, then become computer instructors themselves. With the assistance of the WAC and JARC staff, promoters train the next group of promoter candidates. In this way, they become ambassadors of technology, helping the Latino community to bridge the digital divide.
A Promotores program graduate will have completed three computer classes in the CTC, ten hours of leadership training provided through the WAC, and fourteen hours of classroom volunteer work as an instructor or teaching assistant.
