Studio Wai
Up-and-coming furniture designer and producer Luke Wong finds a new home in JARC’s Honore building. The young artist behind Studio Wai, a flourishing Chicago furniture company, does much of his designing and building in his new studio space.
A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a focus on Interior Architecture, Wong emphasizes simplicity and attentiveness to detail. His pieces, constructed mostly of wood, include tables, beds, seating, and storage vessels. They are modern, characterized by clean lines that correspond to the wood’s grain. Wong also takes on customized projects, such as the remodeling of bathrooms.
In addition to serving his rapidly-growing list of clients with his independent work through his Studio Wai label, Wong designs with Niedermaier, Inc., a well established, internationally renowned, Chicago-based design firm. His work is represented at the firm’s showroom, as well as at Merchandise Mart. This affiliation, as well as powerful word-of-mouth publicity, only add to Wong’s popularity.
Studio Wai’s space, an 800 square foot industrial loft at 4229 North Honore, has become an incubator for burgeoning Chicago artists. Designer and craftsman Jim Doan of esby, inc. formerly occupied the space, where he fashioned and built unique clocks, bowls, and benches, among other home pieces. Donna Piacenza of Studio 1A.M. currently shares the space with Wong. Piacenza designs jewelry and furniture, as well as public projects, such as a recycling bin for the City of Chicago.
